Exosomes vs PRP
A supplied, characterized, allogeneic material against one prepared on site from the recipient's own blood. This is a comparison of supply and standardization, not of clinical outcomes.
What is the difference between exosomes and PRP?
Akira Biotech does not distribute PRP and makes no claim that either material performs better than the other in any application. Everything below concerns how the two are sourced, documented, and handled.
Side by side
| MSC-derived exosomes | Platelet-rich plasma | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Allogeneic — cultured from Wharton's Jelly in donated umbilical cord tissue | Autologous — prepared from the recipient's own blood draw |
| Preparation | Manufactured under cGMP- and ISO-aligned conditions by the partner laboratory, then shipped | Drawn and centrifuged on site immediately before use |
| Dose expression | A counted particle number: 400 billion+ exosomes per mL, NTA-validated per batch | Platelet concentration relative to that individual's baseline, which varies per draw |
| Batch documentation | Certificate of analysis on every batch — particle count, identity markers, sterility | No batch document; the preparation is made per patient |
| Composition | mRNA, miRNA, proteins, and lipids packaged in 40–150 nm vesicles; cargo profile set by the parent lineage | Platelet-derived growth factors, plasma proteins, and residual cellular components |
| Consistency between uses | A specification the batch is released against | Varies with the donor's age, health, haematocrit, and the spin protocol used |
| Chair time | Thaw and draw up — no draw or centrifugation step | Draw, spin, and separate before the material is available |
| Storage | Cryopreserved and shipped cold chain; do not refreeze after thaw | Prepared fresh; not stored |
| Lineage selection | 17 exosome products, each from a different parent lineage | Not applicable — composition follows the donor's blood |
Standardization is the substantive difference
- A number you can put in a protocol. Exosome dose is expressed as particles — 400 billion+ per mL, or 1.2 trillion+ in a 3 mL vial — validated by nanoparticle tracking analysis on every batch.
- A document you can file. Every batch ships with a certificate of analysis recording identity, purity, potency, and safety testing. An autologous preparation has no equivalent.
- A variable removed.Platelet yield varies with the donor's age, health, haematocrit, and the spin protocol; a released batch does not vary between the units drawn from it.
- A choice of lineage. Seventeen exosome products are offered, each carrying the cargo profile of a different parent cell.
Workflow and handling
Exosomes
- Arrives cryopreserved under a temperature-controlled cold chain.
- Requires cold storage on site and a controlled thaw; do not refreeze after thaw.
- No draw and no centrifugation step before use.
- Ordered ahead against a lead time rather than prepared on demand.
PRP
- Requires a draw, a centrifuge, and a validated spin protocol on site.
- No cold storage or shipping logistics.
- Available on demand, with no lead time and no inventory.
- Prepared fresh for each recipient and not stored.
What is not claimed on this page
- No efficacy, outcome, or superiority claim is made for exosomes over PRP, or for either material in any indication.
