Why donor age is the variable that matters
- Proliferation and telomere length. Perinatal MSCs proliferate faster and hold longer telomeres than adult MSCs, so a given donor yields more population doublings before senescence.
- Cytokine profile.Wharton's Jelly MSCs secrete more of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-10 and TGF-β — the mechanism behind the immunomodulatory behaviour described in the MSC literature.
- Batch consistency. One screened perinatal donor can supply many vials, so material characterization is a property of the batch rather than of whoever happened to be drawn from that day.
Low MHC class II and what immune privilege means for allogeneic supply
- MHC class II is the antigen-presenting surface complex that drives allogeneic rejection responses. UCT-MSCs express it at low levels.
- Low expression is what the literature calls immune privilege: allogeneic use without HLA matching or immunosuppression.
- Every Akira Biotech cellular product is allogeneic — donor-derived, from a different individual than the recipient.
- Absence markers CD34−, CD45−, and HLA-DR− are confirmed on every batch, the ISCT identity criteria for a clean MSC population.
Non-invasive recovery and the sourcing position
- Donors are healthy, first-pregnancy, and deliver by scheduled cesarean section.
- Multi-generation donor screening, karyotyping, and pathogen testing precede release.
- Pre-pandemic birth tissue is preferred where safety demands it.
- No procedure is performed on the donor to obtain the tissue — the cord is recovered after delivery.
- Cryopreservation is DMSO-free and glucose-based, in animal-product-free media.

As a source
Every cellular product in the catalog — the base MSC, all fourteen lineage-specific cell lines, every exosome, the secretome, and the isolated mitochondria — is derived from Wharton's Jelly in donated umbilical cord tissue. The cells are cultured and expanded from it.
As a product
Wharton's Jelly is also supplied as minimally processed whole tissue: an intact extracellular matrix with matrix-bound growth factors and trace resident cells, processed without decellularization, culture, or expansion. It is a matrix-driven biologic rather than a cell-therapy product, and it is supplied for IA and IM use.
